Not necessarily -- it just means it is compiled to run on different
systems -- which may also require changes to the code, but the binaries have
to be compiled with libraries specific to that particular platform.
If it is in java, that doesn't mean it's inaccessible -- it just means that
the high level code is compiled into the intermediate form used by the java
virtual machine, which runs on all platforms.
And there is accessibility included now for java -- or at least it can be
installed on client machines, that interface with accessibility hooks in the
program itself (if the developers put it there) so java apps can be very
accessible.
Sorry for all the geek speak, but I'm also on programmer lists as I am a
software developer, and so I think low level when it comes to these
things...

the money for Word...
And Word is a pain to use I find, if you want to do anything beyond typing
just a bunch of paragraphs...
The menus are truely convoluted, and there is a huge number of special
keystrokes to memorize, which only adds to all the keystrokes you need for
the screen reader...
