[gps-talkusers] Re: UK Roundabouts

Hello everyone,

Like we have said before, we understand the issue with roundabouts it is on the feature request list to say "take the 2nd exit." There was no time to get that into this release or the patch. We will try to put it in the next version but there is no guaranty. This is a big issue and we want to make sure it is done correct, with unit tests for a number of different designed roundabouts with both left hand rotation and right hand rotation. This one issue alone is as complicated as adding in zipcode address searching, which is also high on the feature request list.

Needless to say we are aware of the issue and will try to address the issue moving forward.

Thank you.
Charles.

Peter,

I do know that some are managing to give instruction to their drivers without too much of a problem but, in the main, I feel that others of us are not coping with this approach to roundabouts. For myself, I'd say this is because of some lack of visual concept. Put it this way: If the instruction is subsinct "Take the 2nd exit", I could easily relay that; with extra information to wade through and try to comprehend, I find this not possible.

Like you, I love the Sendero GPS in every other way.

Hi Charles, and All,

Firstly, I know I have version 4.02, but I don't know whether the patch has been applied as it was pre-installed, so how do I find out?

Secondly, I want to make it clearr that in every other respect I am finding the software absolutely fantastic. I am migrating from Trekker, which I've been using for years, and which still has a problem with roundabouts, but I have also been using Wayfinder on a mobile phone, which handles roundabouts perfectly iin my view, and that is based on helping drivers navigate for quite some time.

The solutions suggested so far, i.e. exploring the roundabout in advance, or driving around it while waiting for instructions, are simply unsatisfactory workarounds. The driver needs to know in advance which exit to take, and this is particularly true when there are two or three roundabouts only one or two hundred yards apart, which often happens.

If I don't have the patch installed, then I'll try it again with, and report back, but I am very happy that the issue is being helpfully discussed, and only want to see a truly excellent product kkeep its deserved place as best solution.

Best,

Peter

Hello Ian,

I will let a couple of the Beta testers who tested the 4.02 patch which specifically was released to address this very issue respond to this as they have tested this in the UK.

Thanks
Charles

Hi Ian, and All,

As others have said, the Sendero GPS works brilliantly in a car, but there is one major problem with using it in the UK. It does not yet cope properly with roundabouts when giving route instructions, so if you are helping to navigate, you will get stuck at every roundabout. I'm copying this to the GPS-talkusers list just to keep the issue live. The developer has kindly said that it's being addressed, but I'm not entirely sure hhe is yet convinced of just how useless it is at the moment.

Charles, if this seems harsh, then I'd happily make logs for you to show you how impossible it would be to give useful navigation to a driver in this country.

All the best,

Peter

On the subject of GPS, can anyone tell me whether the system offered as an optional extra to the BN can be used effectively in a car? I have a sighted driving wife and don't want us to shell out on a system for the car, which we'd might also use for foreign travel, if I could make the BN do the same job. Any opinions greatly appreciated.
