Because if you are walking then you most likely have something set up to
where you have a car to bring you back thereby missing every other cache.

How would this reduce the amount of backtracking?  You
are still going from point A to B and then back to A? 
If you quit at point C and then head back to point A
for lunch and then after lunch head back to point C
and pick up where you left off and finish the section
at point A, you just back tracked over a large portion
of one half of the trail.
