The reason it failed--remember the cost of that device? And, if I remember correctly, this was a unit for home use. A dart board was manufactured that gave voice feedback as to what you scored. It was designed so that blind people could play darts right along with sighted dart throwers. It was the kind of board found in bars that had a large cabinet with the board above it. You could buy the exact same model that had no speech at Sears for about $800, but, like anything else for the blind, this talking model cost several thousand! I know, because the center for the blind here in Phoenix, Arizona, bought one for their recreation room. Actually, the director of the center and one of his friends probably put up most of the money to buy it. Unfortunately, after he died, the board was sent somewhere else, because the new director of the center thought that darts was a dangerous and unsafe game for blind people to be playing. But why did this device cost so blasted much more?? Same reteric--low demand, high cost. There wasn't much inside the machine that was different. A sensor at each scoring area, a few chips for speech, and some that played music, and circuitry to run them. The parts could have been bought for $100. I've seen the verbal schematic of how the board was built and what was needed. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dronvor" <dronvor@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <gametalk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Sunday, June 25, 2006 5:23 PM Subject: [GameTalk] Re: Accessible games in the arcade Hail All! Some here may not remember the Game Center from Telesensory Systems Inc. This was back in the mid-eighties. It would play 8 different games. There was some attempt on the blind community's part back then to do something like this but it ran aground on the reluctance of the archade owners to try something with a limited appeal. Unless we can somehow make the games appealable to the sighted as well as accessible, I serioously doubt if this idea will become a reality. Just my thoughts on the subject.
