I won't question whether or not Veritas told you that Chris, or even question whether or not it will work, cause it may. I will tell you however, that MS won't support the open file backup of a mounted Exchange store, so I wouldn't make a habit of this type of backup. The Exchange-agent is still the method of preference. Veritas handles the open files itself by making an initial copy of the databases and log files at the beginning of the backup. Then at the end, it makes a differential copy, so that it contains the additional logs made during the backup, the end result being that the database can be brought to the state at the end of the backup. You only have to select the Exchange stores ,i.e. the databases, for backup when you back up Exchange. Obviously, also backup the hard drives and system state if you want a full system backup, but exclude the exchange directories, i.e. log file location and database location. This is not needed as it has backed up the store and logs separately using the Exchaneg agent. You can restore the databases to a live system at the point where the backup ran. Also, if you do the brick level backup of the individual mailboxes, you can restore individual mailboxes, although this backup takes a long time and eats your tapes (as it backs up multiple copies of emails sent to more than one individual). Hope this helps. Chris Cox BEng, DiplEng Information Technology Manager Allen & Heath Limited,Kernick Industrial Estate, Penryn, Cornwall. I backup our Exchange 2000 server with Veritas - we do have the Exchange Agent but what option is the best to use for open files - I understand that the Exchange logs are always changing so the files are open - but do you put a lock on them? I don't think I want it to skip the open files - If you can help- I would sure appreciate the answer here! Thanks in advance - I am learning all the time.
