Obviously this is a bit late and a bit feeble. Some years ago a distant
cousin of mine published a family history (of SMYTHE), which had one foot
in Victoria and the other in W/Aust. I never could buy a copy, but its
title was something like "Gum-suckers and Sandgropers". I can't recall his
derivation of the first slang expression!

PS: Mabs and I are close to 30 years living in suburban Chisholm,
following 20 in Chifley. Yesterday our church turned on a luncheon to mark
40 years since we built it, and we must declare the great pleasure and
nostalgia of the event. Many of our ships have gone missing, of course.

As a Victorian of the 5th Generation I resent that slur, buddy .. and the
other half of me as a 5th generation Sandgroper sort of resents that too ..
:-D Be nice .. all Aussies need that sense of "home" these days, what
with all the horrible things happening to our lovely country by the greedy
few and the overseas interests!
