Excellent Frank,
Yesterday we had our local "Carols Under the Gum Trees" and it was the
first time we had been able to attend.
Amazing blend of local Aussies of European, Asian and African descent
having fun. Arabic, Nuba, Cantonese and Mandarin could be heard with
English. Old fashioned games, bouncy castle and water slide run by the
Alliance congregation. Sat with Welsh and Anglo/Catalonian friends with
their Aussie son. Organised by the local churches, included choirs from
local schools, kids playing their instruments, 1200 sausages funded by
the city and BBQ'd by Anglicans with a bit of help from our friends. All
given away in a slice of bread, wrapped in a serviette with a drink by
the Chinese. Salvos band played, tinsel adorned choristers sang, local
businesses donated equipment and a good crowd arrived.
Community Christmas free, fun, well run and secure. Bouncers in flack
jackets sang along.
Reminded me of my rural childhood with RSL and Sunday School picnics in
a safe, friendly and inclusive setting.
Marg.
