Chris et al,

So, for example, I use "\\ " often to insert line breaks in dokuwiki list
items, such as:
*One, first line\\ One, second line

It seems to me that this wouldn't be very intuitive to do otherwise, since we'd never know when the new line was intentional and when unintentional. In general, I figure that if I still have to learn syntax to do _some_ things,
I may as well use it for _all_ things.

You've confused me here. I understand the reasons for not encouraging the use of line-breaks as new lines in the xhtml. Often its used to achieve a particular appearance on the page, not as the correct representation of content. Encouraging users to write a paragraph all on one line and letting the browser to the wrapping, both in the edit window and with the rendered output has a lot going for it.

However, I'm also always interested in the expansion possibilities of
dokuwiki. Would there be other practical uses for the hook you mention?

Not that I can think of right now. But then I didn't think of all the uses of the action plugin system.
