Phil,
Even though I hardly ever use stereo, I wanted once to make it sound like something was surrounding you but it sounded like it was in the center although everything was stereo. How would you do it, not necessarily in Sonar, but in general?

Hi Rod!!

I always record items such as kick, snare, guitars, vocals and bass guitar in mono. Having said that, if I had a drum or, keyboard sound that was stereo then, I would record 2 channels of it. In other words, I would record it in stereo but, not using a stereo track. This is because, recording the sound as two mono tracks, gives me more control over it as I have two panning controls and therefore, can decide how much of the stereo spread the sound takes up in the mix. For example, if I had a keyboard coming into my sound card then, I would choose the two mono inputs from the desk and sound card for that track. So, I would chose, MOTU 1 for the left channel, and MOTU 2 for the right channel, rather than choosing the stereo input.

If the sound that I am using is a DXi instrument then, I leave it as a stereo track.

Can the pros chime in on this one, please?
As some of you know, I am not a pro, but I have been fortunate to mix some
decent mixes, however, there is a lot of room for improvement.
Here is my dilemma below:

I have the tendency to record all of my tracts in stereo, and mix most of
them this way. My question is this: when should I record a tract stereo, or
mono? I know that stereo sounds better, that's why I recorded as such: but
is this a good practice? I sometimes end up converting my kick into mono,
anyway.
Yet, what are some tracts or instruments that you can say are generally
should be recorded
as a mono signal? Drums, bass, etc?
I always record live guitar as mono, and vocals also.
I use the motif for tracking.
