Hi Neville.Compression on vocals can be very helpful, but don't overdo it. Often, automation is used to lower certain words that stick out, and raise words or parts of words that are too quiet. If you do that first, then apply compression, you may get much more consistant results.
Do you have a control surface so you can record fader movements? As for setting the threshold, that's impossible to say. It depends entirely on the material you're working with, the style of music etc. There is no one size fits all setting.
If working with multiple bands is too complicated, try putting the Sonitus Compressor on a track and experimenting with that. Usually, the thing to do is set a fairly high ratio, then listen carefully as you lower the threshold. You'll start to hear it act on the material, bringing down louder bits. You probably don't want to squash everything, just a little. When you get the threshold where you want it, back the ratio off to something more conservative. Basically, you're turning up the ratio just to hear the compressor working more clearly.
