Brian,
The LP64 EQ and compressor are excellent. Anything that is "linear
phase" is probably good for the job.
Yes, Waves make a limiter, but I'm seeing less people talk about it
in various forums.
Boost11 that comes with Sonar is simple, but I find I can really
hear it working. In other words, it creates artifacts or
by-products. But, try it anyway.
I really like the Wave Arts Final Plug, whose parameters are
accessible through the track inspector. I usually pick a preset
and then adjust to taste, usually making the limiting a lot more
subtle, raising the threshold etc.
You might also want to check out Cytomic Software, www.cytomic.com.
Their compressor plug-in does a great job, and is a faithful
recreation of the classic SSL master bus compressor. Just a tiny
bit on the whole mix, say 2 or 3 dB of compression, really glues
things together nicely.
A couple limiters I haven't tried yet, but that I've heard great
things about are:
BXXL made by Brainworx. They also make a dynamic equalizer worth
checking out, and all their plug-ins do a lot of mid/side
processing, if you need that.
I've heard amazing claims about Slate Digital's FGX plug-in as
well, some people claiming it's even better than the limiter built
into iZotope Ozone. So that's one to investigate as well.
Speaking of Ozone, accessibility developments seem to have ground
to a halt there. It's a shame really. Being able to do multiband
EQ, compression, harmonic excitation, stereo image manipulation and
limiting all in one plug-in seems pretty handy. I really don't know
if they are still serious about accessibility though.
You can get an idea of what is possible through Ozone by going into
Sound Forge and playing with the mastering effects bundle. It's
really unfortunate we can't edit parameters in there. Often, I hit
on a preset that does something I want, but that I really would
need to tweak for it to be usable in a given situation.
