Phil replied: I think that means that your gains/faders are set to the optimum 
level all the way 
through your signal path.  Unity gain is a way of calibrating gear to optimal 
levels.  This is 
important, as you want good signal to noise ratio.  I am sure Sean/Tim could 
explain this better 
than I am.  Obviously you would need that in order to record everything with 
good levels and as 
little noise as possible.  Having said all that, if the unit is set at unity 
gain then, you will 
still need to set gains on individual channels in order to get the correct 
levels.  I record 
everything here at 44.1. and 24 bit, with the highest level being minus 6DB.  I 
can always peak 
normalise the levels later on to minus 0.5 or, minus 0.1 DB.
