Actually, you don't need to have Win98 installed first. Just make sure
that the primary partition on the first hard drive is a FAT partition.
It doesn't even need to be very big. In fact, for most drives you can
make it the minimum size a partition can be and you can do it. (You
need at least enough space to hold the boot files. A 1 MB partition is
large enough.)

As Vernon is hinting at I think with W2k and XP you need to have 98 installed first.

Sounds good, but can I still get W98SE to boot from the same HD after installing XP? We also put a new 160Gig HD in before upgrading to XP. The old 30Gig HD is in as a slave just like it was before the upgrade to XP. Is it possible to boot from it? If so that would be the best of both worlds.

Easiest fix if y ou have hardware dependant DOS items to run is to dual boot - 98SE and XP with XP being your default and install the DOS programs under the 98SE boot. My wife has a DOS based embroidery program that uses the LPT1 port that I had to do this with and it works AOK.

Does anyone know of a solution to a problem that I am having on XP Home. The system is my Dad's which was just upgraded from 98_SE to XP Home. He likes to play the Wolfenstine DOS based games. When the system was first upgraded the system had no sound, but the DOS games played via the PC speaker. After fighting with about a dozen different drivers for a SiS7012/CM'97 integrated sound card/chip and not getting any sound (even though XP seemed happy when you looked at the sound devices via the hardware manager) he went and bought a Creative Labs sound card. Now windows XP has sound, but the DOS based games error with "NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction" type error. Any help or web sites would be greatly appreciated. ------------------------------------------------------------------ --------- Computer Talk Shop http://www.computertalkshop.com Un-subscribe/Vacation, http://www.computertalkshop.com/list_options.htm
