I was right to focus on "\windows\system32\system2.exe". I renamed regedit.exe to regedit.com, which let me run it to check my startup registrations, and it was in there. Got me a copy of the Startup Programs Tracker at http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/ ... it also showed that program in my startup. I renamed the offender temporarily and rebooted... suddenly, taskman and msconfig worked... so I turned it off in the startup and rebooted one more time, and its registry entry has disappeared.
