I was right to focus on "\windows\system32\system2.exe".

I renamed regedit.exe to regedit.com, which let me run it to check my
startup registrations, and it was in there.

Got me a copy of the Startup Programs Tracker at
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/ ... it also showed that program in my
startup.

I renamed the offender temporarily and rebooted... suddenly, taskman and
msconfig worked... so I turned it off in the startup and rebooted one more
time, and its registry entry has disappeared.

Somehow or other, something's got hold of my puter today... and
whatever it is, Norton, SpyBot and AdAware (all updated daily) don't
see it.

"system2.exe" tried to act as a server (firewall prevented that) and
now I can't get Taskman or Regedit to stay on the screen for more
than 2 seconds, and they often don't appear at all when I try to run
them...

Anyone seen this before? Any suggestions?
