Well, just to clear one thing up: Linux isn't a programming language, it's 
an operating system. :)  Python's good to learn (wish I had the time), and 
try out perl while you're at it. 

C++ and Java are good, but try learning C (first, preferably), since it's 
a lower-level language.  The higher-level stuff is good for fast 
programming, but bad for really learning what's going on.  

As far as books go, I recommend anything by O'Reilly (www.oreilly.com), 
and for a site, linuxprogramming.com.
