C++ and Java are good, but try learning C (first, preferably), since it's a lower-level language. The higher-level stuff is good for fast programming, but bad for really learning what's going on. As far as books go, I recommend anything by O'Reilly (www.oreilly.com), and for a site, linuxprogramming.com.
