No, not true! Backing up is *always* a good idea, whether you are updating an
Apex, a Braille Sense, an iPhone, a PC, or anything else. First, there is the
possibility for some massive failure or other that will erase or corrupt
things, as remote as that chance may be. More importantly, though, what if your
unit failed to upgrade and needed servicing, or needed more work than you had
time for? With no backup, you have nothing, but with a backup, you can at least
access your files on a different device.

To the OP, most system files do not need to be backed up (braille tables,
manuals, and so on). However, there are a lot of files in system folders on the
flash disk that you should back up. Some examples include everything in
keyplan, email folders.cdb in keymail, address list.cdb in keylist, and so
forth. Generally, we recommend a full backup, just so you don't miss anything,
but if space is at a premium, just be sure to grab the files for those three
applications (assuming you use them). If a bigger thumb drive is in order,
prices have really, really dropped in the last few years, so you might want to
consider picking one up, especially with Cyber Monday approaching.
