There is also the speech Bush gave right after Setp. 11, that helped insurehis relection, that might be someday classed in this realm. Shelley L. I did some googling, and there are some famous Abolitionist speeches both u England and the U.S., but though powerful they didn't have a direct effect on society--it took more speeches and events. Maybe too many people, too, will think of Kennedy's first inaugural speech, in which he said "ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country. This became the patriotic rallying cry for Kennedy's New Frontier initiatives, which emphasized the space program, the Peace Corps, and increased defense spending. Whether that was a direct effect of the speech, probably not, because the programs had to be created and passed by Congress, but it did inspire young people to join the Peace Corps and to do good things for the U.S.--there was some sort of urban peace corps, too, though that may have occurred later. Of course Hitler's speeches had a big impact, not only on his society but on the world--a negative impact, but he could arouse people and has an effect. Franklin Roosevelt also made inspiring speeches, e.g., we have nothing to fear but fear itself that inspired citizens in the U.S. to rally and do their bit for the war effort, buy War Bonds, etc. Good luck. I am looking for something a bit more obscure, but that had an impact on society. Thanks for the suggestions. I will take a look at Amazon.
