So, the speaker has a shut off switch or button on it?

  Hi Rick and list:

It has no auto shut-off capability. You have to remember to turn it off.

By the way, you can also use any cassette machine that has an auxiliary
input as a speaker for the bookport if you wish. Just get a patch cable from
Radio Shack that you run from the bookport to the cassette player. Once
you're all plugged in, push play on the tape machine then 2 or the read key
on the bookport and it will play through the cassette machine speaker.

  Cheers,
  Dave
