And don't forget about the price.

PlexTalk Pocket is made by Plextor / one of the highest quality producers of major computer components in the world (RW drives etc.). They have also been awarded the NLS contract to produce the newest line of book players for the US Library of congress National Library Service (NLS) program; Arguably the largest such program in the world. I have a BookCourier and still love the thing for the double talk voice, but I also have a Plextalk Pocket which I will begin to rely on as my BC ails. The Plextalk is similar to the stream but with higher quality audio recording specs, and it’s a fully functioning DAISY book recording / editing tool. I don’t think there’s an e-mail group for it yet.

Just because the new version has been scrapped, surely that doesn't mean our present BookCouriers will not continue to be supported. Does Springer own this list? Even if they do, couldn't someone else take it over?

Thanks Bud. I guess it is finally time for us all to move on. Before we all scatter to the four winds, I wonder if it would be a good idea to start a new maling list (I assume Spronger will close this one down without warning). We clearly all have a great deal in common and will all be on the lookout for a reploacement technology. I sanybody up for this?

I had sent a couple of email messages to Springer Design asking about the timing of availability of the new BookCourier. Since I had gotten no response to my emails, I decided to call them directly. Surprise of surprises, somebody actually answered the phone. I very politely asked about the plans for the release of the new BookCourier. The response to my query was “the new Bookcourier has been discontinued.” I asked if anything had been put on the BookCourier list to that effect, suspecting that I had just missed the announcement. “No, that hasn’t been done yet,” was the reply. “Somebody will put a message out as soon as we can. We are pretty busy around here working on something that’s actually making us some money.” I have no objection to a company working on things that make money. Unless the company is being funded by a philanthropic source, they have to make money so they can pay their employees and invest in the future of the company. However, I do object to the fact that the company couldn’t take the ten minutes necessary to publicly tell those of us who have been waiting for the new Currier that there wasn’t going to be any. Now, we in waiting can go on to buy a competitive product on the market. It doesn’t seem to be asking too much that the potential customers for the new BookCourier be notified by the company that plans for the new Bookcourier have been scrapped.
