Did you have trouble with the screws not being hardened. I have trouble with those screws getting stripped, since I may not stay exactly in a streight line with the screw and the bit. I didn't bother drilling the larger hole for the head of the screw, just drove it in and let it bury itself. Seems pretty sturdy. But I did toe nail wherever it was possible. If you are using 3 inch screws or nails, start about 1.25 inches back from the end of the board, and use 30 degrees between the nail and board, you end up with 1.5 inches in the stud and 1.5 inches in the footer or header. And, the nail should come out right in the middle of the bottom of the stud.
