Get rid of this version of Eloquence.  Apparently Jaws uses a broken
version of Eloquence.  This no longer happens with Window-Eyes and all
screen readers can use other speech without these ills.  Another
solution is to plug up these offending character combinations with
substitution strings and add them to your exception dictionary.  I don't
know how to tell JFW users to do this but I'm sure it is doable.
