Ah, what memories that must be. I would love to find a restored console
system like that. In our den we have an old 1914 Victrola that plays 78 rpm
records. We had a house guest over the other day and I cranked it up for
her. You haven't heard "That's amore" until you have heard on an original.

Wow, a real old-timer!  Remember the good old days when you could assemble a
sweet sounding vacuum tube amplifier from a Dynaco, Eico. Lafayette or Heath
kit?  And you could buy raw speaker drivers and stick them in your own
wooden enclosure?  My very first taste of "hi fi" was the humongous RCA
Victor console TV/radio/record player that my parents bought in the early
1950's.  It had twin 8" speakers housed in a gorgeous mahogony cabinet and
was state-of-the art for its time.  My dad would sit in the living room and
listen to his cherished opera records for hours.  It even had an FM tuner,
but in those days, there were still very few FM stations actually
broadcasting.
