Wow, a real old-timer! Remember the good old days when you could assemble a sweet sounding vacuum tube amplifier from a Dynaco, Eico. Lafayette or Heath kit? And you could buy raw speaker drivers and stick them in your own wooden enclosure? My very first taste of "hi fi" was the humongous RCA Victor console TV/radio/record player that my parents bought in the early 1950's. It had twin 8" speakers housed in a gorgeous mahogony cabinet and was state-of-the art for its time. My dad would sit in the living room and listen to his cherished opera records for hours. It even had an FM tuner, but in those days, there were still very few FM stations actually broadcasting.

                                                Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the interesting replies to my query about bookshelf speakers. Actually I guess powered speakers would not be necessary since my Onkyo TX8011 claims to have 50 watts per chanel and 20 hz to 20 khz. I guess us new guys are supposed to introduce ourselves. I'm 92 but my hearing is still pretty good so that's why I wanted to get some fairly nice bookshelf speakers since I have to get rid of my big KLH ones since I'm moving into a small converted garage apartment. I was in the piano businessfor years where I sold and rented and rebuilt pianos but have been retired for some twenty years so have a lot of time to listen to music. Sounds like a great list here and I am going to enjoy it. .
