Jan,
There may well be certain Web sites where the presence of Adobe Flash Player is absolutely essential in order to play videos or watch movies. In fact, if memory serves I think that the Hulu Web site at www.hulu.com may require Adobe Flash in order to watch TV content. Btw, even though Hulu is a paid service they do offer some free content even if you don't pay the monthly subscription fee, but I digress.
The problem that I have with Flash Player is that it is often plagued with security holes. These issues are fixed by Adobe, only to find out that someone has discovered even more security holes. The only Web site that I use which was heavily dependent on Flash Player was Youtube but Youtube now has an HTML5 option, which allows them to use the Web browser itself to play videos without relying on a third-party plug-in. Other than Youtube, the other sites I visit don't need it and so I uninstalled it months ago and haven't missed it.
If there are sites you visit which absolutely require it you can disable it and just enable it when you need it. How you do this depends on which Web browser you use.

David, your comments raise a question in my mind, namely: Why would
you not install Adobe Flash Player? If you don't have it, what is the
alternative? I think I must have it, because Mozilla keeps telling me
it doesn't like it and mentions something about a plug-in or an add-on
or some such thing. It makes it impossible for me to listen to
certain things friends send me, but I didn't know there was an
alternative to Adobe Flash Player.

This message comes from the Tek Talk mailing list and was forwarded to me by
Christina. It contains links to lots of freeware and so I'm passing this on
in case some of the titles are of use to any of you. I'd first like to add
my own comments and warnings.
First, the fact that I'm passing this on does not mean I endorse or even
approve of all of these programs. As a big example, you couldn't pay me
enough to install Adobe Flash Player on my computer and a link to that
program appears toward the top of this list.
Also, I will only download software if it comes from the page of the vendor
or company which creates and distributes it. One of the titles on this list
is an old version of MalwareBytes and I don't recommend that people download
this version. First, the detection in 2.2 is much better than 1.75. Also,
the link for this older version is from someone's Box account, which I
believe is a service similar to Dropbox. ust as I don't allow strangers into
my home, I don't allow software distributed by an annonymous individual on
my computer.
Finally, I have not used most of these packages and therefore can't
guarantee I can answer questions about the programs. That being said, I'm
grateful to Christina for sending this to me. Here we go.

Subject: [TechTalk] List of useful resources, links, and freeware

This is a list of useful resources, links, and freeware. It will be send
out as a reminder every two weeks or possibly once a month. I haven't
decided yet, but I will base my decision on feedback from list members.
Most of the freeware is fairly accessible, although some may require some
mouse cursor navigation. I have tried to place some of the more
requested
types of applications at the top of the list. If anyone feels that there
is
something else worth listing, please inform me in a private message.
