David,
If you don't mind me throwing in my two cents, I would also like to add a
warning based on personal experience.
First, you will find a few utilities here that are not Windows ten
compatible even though they claim to be. Sometimes people on various list
will tell you they work great but they have long-term effects on your
system.
Second, you will find that some utilities are packaged with adware or bundle
ware oas it is sometimes called. If you are using a free antivirus program
you might not catch it but if you are using a program such as Kaspersky,
Vipre or something more choosy about what goes on your system you might be
unable to install the free utility. Sometimes well-meaning individuals on
the lists will encourage you to go ahead and install even if it means making
an exception in your antivirus rules. I
Urge you to think long and hard before you put a free application on your
system that may or may not be sending personal information to who knows who
and who knows where.
Ask yourself if you really need to download that from there or rip that CD
or DVD right this second or whatever that free utility happens to be
promising to do.
Once I had to troubleshoot a system that took forty minutes to boot all
because of a toolbar that was really sending personal information every time
the system booted. And it went behind the scenes and installed about seven
of its friends without the owner's permission. So once I got the machine
cleaned up the owner asked where her free toolbar was. I said it was really
adware in disguise and I zapped it. Even though her machine booted in five
minutes instead of forty she went right out and installed the toolbar again
so she could play the online games. And in a week was back where she had
started.
Now having said all that I have already downloaded some of these and plan to
experiment with some others. I keep my Vipre up to date and I also keep my
user control set so no changes can be made without me hitting Alt Y..
Hope that helps.

Subject: [blind-philly-comp] Fwd: [TechTalk] List of useful resources,
links, and freeware

This message comes from the Tek Talk mailing list and was forwarded to me by
Christina. It contains links to lots of freeware and so I'm passing this on
in case some of the titles are of use to any of you. I'd first like to add
my own comments and warnings.
First, the fact that I'm passing this on does not mean I endorse or even
approve of all of these programs. As a big example, you couldn't pay me
enough to install Adobe Flash Player on my computer and a link to that
program appears toward the top of this list.
Also, I will only download software if it comes from the page of the vendor
or company which creates and distributes it. One of the titles on this list
is an old version of MalwareBytes and I don't recommend that people download
this version. First, the detection in 2.2 is much better than 1.75. Also,
the link for this older version is from someone's Box account, which I
believe is a service similar to Dropbox. ust as I don't allow strangers into
my home, I don't allow software distributed by an annonymous individual on
my computer.
Finally, I have not used most of these packages and therefore can't
guarantee I can answer questions about the programs. That being said, I'm
grateful to Christina for sending this to me. Here we go.

Subject: [TechTalk] List of useful resources, links, and freeware

This is a list of useful resources, links, and freeware. It will be
send out as a reminder every two weeks or possibly once a month. I
haven't decided yet, but I will base my decision on feedback from list
members.
Most of the freeware is fairly accessible, although some may require
some mouse cursor navigation. I have tried to place some of the more
requested types of applications at the top of the list. If anyone
feels that there is something else worth listing, please inform me in a
private message.
