It would seem that there's a new DAISY player in town from the Plextalk folks called the Linio Pocket. The Plextalk Linio came out several years ago and took advantage of the DAISY online protocol, which allows users to directly download books from services like BARD and Bookshare. Most of the newer players can do this, such as the next-gen Victor Stream and the new Blaze products from Hims. The newly announced Linio Pocket has this capability. It also has 12 gb of internal RAM, although not all of that is accessible to the user. It comes with a 4 GB SD card, has direct downloading capabilities, and includes reminders and I believe an alarm clock. A Capela speech voices are included, although the announcement didn't say which voices you get or if more are available. Pricing was not announced and the Plextalk Web site included a rather badly translated FAQ which I'll bet was originally written in Japanese. Since Freedom Scientific distributes the older Plextalk Pocket I'm wondering if they will be carrying the new Linio Pocket as well; their Web site, so far, doesn't mention the new player. Since the older Plextalk Pocket has the ability to wirelessly download podcasts and can connect to Internet radio stations I hoped we might see book downloading capabilities come to that device but this is probably not likely. As I find out more I'll let you know.
