the problem for democrats in off years is poor voter turn out. Congressional
and other local campaigns just don’t have the excitement for many voters that a
Presidential or other ticket campaign has. In california statewide offices are
up in the years when there is no presidential election. The downside to that is
that crazy initiatives can qualify for the California ballot with a lower
threshold of signatures as it is based on the gubernatorial vote. in the last
governor’s election we had a very low t urn out so in this cycle an initiative
or proposition could qualify for the ballot with about 360,000 signatures.

congress
Hi Frank,
I strongly agree with one point in this article. That is, democrats seem like
they put way more effort into electing a president than they do when it comes
to electing members of Congress. That’s why they seem to do better in the
presidential elections and do so lousy in the off years.
But, until and unless we can get the leadership of the Democratic party to
spern large corporate donations, I doubt we’ll ever see anything more than lip
service to the real change that is needed to decrease income inequality and to
re-energize a vibrant middle classs which has been hollowed out by 30 years of
wrong-headed policies.
