I have proofed books that are good quality too. Sometimes all it is that is
making it good is dialect. Think I will go over to our library and see if
they have any books that are before 2000 and perhaps try my hand at
scanning. Looks like we need some scans.

I agree. I will, when downloading books, actually give books marked as
"good" a chance and try reading them, because a good portion of them are not
horrible, and besides the minor annoyance of scanos and perhaps headers,
depending on the book, they're readable with few problems. That isn't the
case with all of them, of course (for instance, the old, good-quality copy
of Martin Amis' Dead Babies before it got replaced was pretty decent, except
it had large portions that were garbled to the point of unreadability), but
I would guess that most just need someone to go through them and correct the
scanos and remove the headings, making rescanning not entirely necessary. I
once saw a book quality report for a 966-page collection of short stories
that was in excellent quality, and the only problem the person had with it
is that it still had headers on each page. That's it. But it was rescanned
just because of that, which, to me, doesn't seem right when you could just
have someone go through and take them out. There's no hope for fair quality
books, at all, and I am glad that they only constitute a tiny fraction of
the collection these days.
It would be nice to have at least some of Bookshare's outsourced or in-house
scans available for proofreading. I don't know if that breaks some sort of
rule, or if they've got a specific reason for not doing it, but usually,
when I go to check out a book, when before the influx of publishers signed a
contract with Bookshare I would see anywhere from two to three hundred books
on that list at all times, now I only see around fifty, maybe, and most of
them have holds on them. The low number of books available is partially
affected by the fact that in my experience, most books will get checked out
very shortly after being submitted, so that number doesn't mean that not
many books are being worked on by volunteers in general, but it does give
the people who don't avidly check that list and who don't have scanner
friends who will put holds on books for them little to proof, and Roger's
suggestion would fix that.

I came on board in 2008. I have not seen this, but I have been told that at
one time before I started volunteering books were scanned at the Bookshare
offices and then added to the checkout list for volunteers to proofread.
Well, it was called validate back then and considering some of the early
books I have downloaded and read I don't think there was any real
proofreading. The book I am reading right now is an example. It is The
Exiles Trilogy by Ben Bova and it was added in 2002 and it appears to be a
raw scan. It is full of scanning errors and the page headers are still
there. I am digressing though. I meant to say that the scans were added to
the checkout list for volunteers and as long as I have been volunteering I
have not seen that happen. Are all the books scanned at the Bookshare office
now sent to outsourcers exclusively? I ask because there is a dearth of
books on the checkout list now. If any time would be a good one for
Bookshare to add its own scans this would be a good time. Something else
occurs to me. When one of those older books in fair or good condition is
reported with a quality report Bookshare rescans it and replaces it.
Wouldn't it be better to just dump the good quality ones on the checkout
list for repair? That one I am reading now really only needs a good and
thorough proofreading. It is already readable, but there are numerous
scanning errors to be corrected and the page headers need to be removed.
However, I have made a quality report on it and Bookshare informs me that it
will be rescanned and replaced. I would not suggest, though, placing the
fair quality books on the checkout list. Those are beyond proofreading help.
They all need to be rescanned. It does seem to me , though that some of
these suggestions could provide more for volunteers to work on.

I would like either of these, so just put a hold on either one, please.
Susan can have first choice. Thanks so very much Mary!

Hi Susan and Reggie,

I'm replying to both of your requests for more info about the books for
which I'd like proofreaders here. I hope that's all right.

The first book that I have available is Ten Beach Road by Wendy Wax. Here
is the text from the back cover:

[From The Back Cover]

On the brink of ruin, three very different women discover themselves where
they least expect ... at Ten Beach Road .

Madeline, Avery, and Nikki are strangers to one another, but they have one
thing in common. They each wake up one morning to discover that their life
savings have vanished, along with their trusted financial manager ...
leaving them with nothing but co-ownership of a ramshackle beachfront house.

Madeline Singer is a homemaker coping with empty-nest syndrome and an
unemployed husband. Avery Lawford is an architect--or was, until she somehow
became the sidekick on her ex-husband's TV show. And professional matchmaker
Nikki Grant is trying to recover from her biggest mistake ...

No one is going to save them but themselves. Determined to fight back, they
throw their lots in together and take on the challenge of restoring the
historic beach house to its former glory. But just as they begin to reinvent
themselves and discover the power of friendship, their secrets threaten to
tear down their trust, and destroy their lives a second time ...

Praise for the novels of Wendy Wax

READERS GUIDE INSIDE

----

The second book is A Girl's Guide to Witchcraft by Mindy Klasky, and here is
the text from its back cover:

Which is more unlikely? Meeting a single, straight, reasonably attractive,
willing-to-commit man? Or Discovering a secret cache of magic books? For
good girl Jane Madison, neither has a shot in hell of coming true--until the
day she finds a hidden room... Now she's done a bit of experimenting and
found a spell that makes her irresistible to men-... more ≫even those who
have previously ignored her. And another that turns a cat into her witch's
familiar (a snarky, critical, self-absorbed man--pretty much a typical
male). Though her impulsive acts of magic have brought a warder (sexy,
grouchy, elusive and determined to stop her from using magic) down on her,
Jane's not willing to let go of this fantastic new life. Though she wonders
about having things that aren't "real," she's having too much fun to stop.
After all, no one ever said being a witch was easy...

---

If either of you is interested in proofreading either of these books, I'll
happily put a hold on the book you'd like to proofread for you when I submit
the book, which will be almost as soon as you say you're interested in
proofreading it.

I hope each of you will find a book that is to your liking!

Thanks in any case for the offers to proofread the books!

Hi Mayrie,

What is the romance you have for someone to proof? I may be interested in
taking it if it hasn’t been spoken for. Thanks.

Hi Reggie,

Any book labeled PRIORITY is on the check out page by mistake. If you
encounter any book with that designation, please don't download it, and
notify Carrie at ckarnos@xxxxxxxxx and let her know that the book is on the
check out page by mistake. Those books labeled PRIORITY are books that have
already been proofread by outsourcers and which have mistakenly ended up on
the check out page, rather than in the approval queue.

And, Reggie, I will have a few books available for proofreading very soon.
All formatting has been done. What remains needing to be done is to read
the books through, and to make sure that paragraph marks between dialogue
are where they should be. This is what I mean.

"I don't want to go to Grandma's house," Max whined. "Why?" his mother
asked.

As I have written the above, there are two lines of dialogue which have been
put together as one. What needs to happen here is for a paragraph mark,
(carriage return) to be inserted before the word "Why?" In the books I'd
like proofreaders for, the final thing needed will be a final spell check
after reading the books.

I have one erotica book, one romance/fiction, one fiction, and one teen
fiction book that will need a bit more care taken with it.

Are you interested in any of these? I can give titles and authors if you
prefer later.

Sorry for the ramble!

Mayrie

Hello all:

Is there anyone who has finished scanning a book who needs a proofer? I
would like anything on animals, history, fiction, romance, mystery and
thrillers, nonfiction biography or events. All that is on without a hold is
religion. Alternatively, is there anyone who would let me have one of their
holds?

Another problem. I downloaded what I think is a textbook Priority TX Health
and Wellness. I tried to make it into a .doc file, which I normally do as I
have Word 2003 and it will not open in my BN. When I opened it on the BN it
gave me a message stating “Ipad converter does not recognize this as a word
2007.” I think it was scanned on a later Word. Can someone pick it up and
proof? It looks like it was priority. I intended to spend tonight and
tomorrow proofing. Instead I had to download something about shells Shelley
scanned. Hoping it has pic descriptions as I wonder if it is one of the
books that people are working on for descriptions. I cannot help with this.
If it is not described and was only let go back to download because of this,
can someone let me know, please before I get too far. Appreciate much!

Reggie

Thanks for any help anyone can give me on any of these problems.
