I came on board in 2008. I have not seen this, but I have been told that
at one time before I started volunteering books were scanned at the
Bookshare offices and then added to the checkout list for volunteers to
proofread. Well, it was called validate back then and considering some
of the early books I have downloaded and read I don't think there was
any real proofreading. The book I am reading right now is an example. It
is The Exiles Trilogy by Ben Bova and it was added in 2002 and it
appears to be a raw scan. It is full of scanning errors and the page
headers are still there. I am digressing though. I meant to say that the
scans were added to the checkout list for volunteers and as long as I
have been volunteering I have not seen that happen. Are all the books
scanned at the Bookshare office now sent to outsourcers exclusively? I
ask because there is a dearth of books on the checkout list now. If any
time would be a good one for Bookshare to add its own scans this would
be a good time. Something else occurs to me. When one of those older
books in fair or good condition is reported with a quality report
Bookshare rescans it and replaces it. Wouldn't it be better to just dump
the good quality ones on the checkout list for repair? That one I am
reading now really only needs a good and thorough proofreading. It is
already readable, but there are numerous scanning errors to be corrected
and the page headers need to be removed. However, I have made a quality
report on it and Bookshare informs me that it will be rescanned and
replaced. I would not suggest, though, placing the fair quality books on
the checkout list. Those are beyond proofreading help. They all need to
be rescanned. It does seem to me , though that some of these suggestions
could provide more for volunteers to work on.
