I agree. I will, when downloading books, actually give books marked as
"good" a chance and try reading them, because a good portion of them are
not horrible, and besides the minor annoyance of scanos and perhaps
headers, depending on the book, they're readable with few problems. That
isn't the case with all of them, of course (for instance, the old,
good-quality copy of Martin Amis' Dead Babies before it got replaced was
pretty decent, except it had large portions that were garbled to the
point of unreadability), but I would guess that most just need someone
to go through them and correct the scanos and remove the headings,
making rescanning not entirely necessary. I once saw a book quality
report for a 966-page collection of short stories that was in excellent
quality, and the only problem the person had with it is that it still
had headers on each page. That's it. But it was rescanned just because
of that, which, to me, doesn't seem right when you could just have
someone go through and take them out. There's no hope for fair quality
books, at all, and I am glad that they only constitute a tiny fraction
of the collection these days.
It would be nice to have at least some of Bookshare's outsourced or
in-house scans available for proofreading. I don't know if that breaks
some sort of rule, or if they've got a specific reason for not doing it,
but usually, when I go to check out a book, when before the influx of
publishers signed a contract with Bookshare I would see anywhere from
two to three hundred books on that list at all times, now I only see
around fifty, maybe, and most of them have holds on them. The low number
of books available is partially affected by the fact that in my
experience, most books will get checked out very shortly after being
submitted, so that number doesn't mean that not many books are being
worked on by volunteers in general, but it does give the people who
don't avidly check that list and who don't have scanner friends who will
put holds on books for them little to proof, and Roger's suggestion
would fix that.
