Okay, I just subjected one of those recalcitrant pages to the adjustment of contrast remedy. I started at 25 which resulted in my being told that I had a blank page and rescanned it several times adjusting the contrast up in increments of 25 each time. When I got to 175 I got a fairly decent scan. The text was a little unclear at the end of the page, but I may be getting the hang of this. I still want to do a little more experimenting, though, and I probably will not tackle one of these decrepit old books until I have finished proofreading the fairly lengthy one I am proofreading now.
