Hi Cindy,
Keep in mind. Jessie posted in 2004 back in August I believe, a plee for
a smaller step 1 page. He sited the fact that earlier in the year there had
been 600 books in the admin queue, but they had knuckled down and cleaned
out the backlog. He was hoping something similar could be done with the
validation pool.
In the beginning of 2005 there were certainly more than 150 books in the
queue and twice this year Gustavo has cleared out the queue and been
"twiddling" his thumbs when it came to book approvals.
From week to week I'm sure the amount of time Gustavo has for going through
the admin pool varies. As I'm sure how many books he can approve also varies
in a given time frame, based on certain factors. My books for example are
probably quite easy for him to look over and approve because they all are
from a few series and thus the critical information like copyright holder is
consistent. Carrie's are also usually available in the office to look at if
he has questions. Now I'm not saying for certain these are factors in
Gustavo's time, I'm just making an educated guess.
So overall point here is that the size of the admin pool will vary from week
to week, just as the size of step 1 varies, sometimes its as high as 600,
earlier this year it was below 400.
So keep the scans and validations coming as I know we can't move forward
without them.
Jake

But it doesn't help to scan and/or validate more books if they don't get approved and into the collection. Perhaps the 50 books added the other day were after I counted the 153 in the queue, but that still leaves 103. I haven't checked today. I wish that rule about having to use employees sisn't exist, or that they could hire some of us for $1 a year. smile

Hi again Elizabeth, Yes, getting more people involved is a big goal for 2006 I think at least. That not only means more volunteers, but more subscribing members.
More goals will come down as the year progresses, but BookShare I think is finding that we need more folks willing to volunteer so that we can keep our numbers increasing at a steady pace, but the quality improving as well.
There is a fine line between numbers and quality. If a book is in overall great shape, the thought is to not bother attempting to improve it that last little bit, but to improve a book that drastically needs it. This will keep the numbers going up at a small sacrifice of quality.
Schools in particular want to see that we can provide high quality books. Having BookShare introduced to students is probably a good thing as they will then be familiar with it for the rest of their lives. The catch of course is to make a good impression.
Okay, I'm done with this long post *grin* just thought I'd throw some thoughts out there.
