Sue,

Actually, I don't need to know any other software because, as I said in my
earlier message, you really need either Dell or someone there who knows
computers to help you determine if you're running a firewall. I did mention
in the last message that you may have either McAfee or Norton software which
could be running a firewall, as well as XP. Dell should know this since
they built your laptop and loaded XP and possibly McAfee or Norton. Even if
you didn't purchase either McAfee or Norton, Dell and Gateway typically load
a trial version of one or the other.

From what you mentioned below, it sounds like you may be running XP Media
Center in stead of XP Home or XP Professional. To find out so you can
include this info the next time you ask for assistance, open Windows
Explorer, either from your Programs menu or by holding down the Windows key
and pressing E. When it opens you will be on My Computer. Open the
properties either with the context menu or with Alt-Enter. The dialog box
that opens will tell you which version of XP you are running.

HTH

Gerald

Gerald,

I validate with MS Word, not wordpad. I don't knoow what version of Windows

XP I have, but I have verizon.com DSL with MSN. I have Microsoft Office,
and Word says 2006. I have notepad, Windows Media Player, a lot of stuff I
can't use. I had to use Jaws 7.0 professioonal because Dell goofed and sent

the media center. But my fille says Microsoft Word at the top, so I am
using it. And remember, I am a braille only user, so I have a Powerbraille

40 refreshable braille display. I also have DVD, Adobe Acrobat. Reall
player. What else do you need to know?

<grin>
I am very frustrated because I have tried and tried and tried some more to
get this file up because I validated it by reading it and correcting.

Sue,

I don't mean to be picking on you,but you still didn't provide much info.
You didn't mention which version of XP you're running, and if JAWS is the
only software you have installed, then are you validating your books in
WordPad? You no doubt have other software which came on your laptop,
probably either Word Perfect since it came from Dell, or MS Word since I
believe that's what you've been using in the past. The reason I'm bringing
up this oversight is that Dell probably loaded McAfee or Norton on your
laptop and both have versions which come with a firewall. XP Pro also comes
with a firewall, and I believe XP Home does as well, but I'm not sure if
it's normally installed. That's why I suggest you talk to either Dell or
get someone there to help you. Dell should have a record of how they
configured the laptop, and someone there could look on your laptop to see
what you have. Trying to talk you through this via e-mail would be
impractical, if not impossible.

Sorry I couldn't be more help other than to suggest checking to see if a
firewall is causing the problem.

Gerald

Hi Gerald,

I have Windows XP and Jaws 7.0. John said he had no problem uploading Hello

Darkness, and what I am wondering is this. If it is Firewall, would I also
have trouble downloading books? And how would Firewall be listed on my
computer?

Thanks,

Sue S.

Sue,

There's not much info to go on here. All you mentioned was that you have a
new laptop from Dell and are using DSL, nothing about which operating system
you're using or what software is installed on it and how that differs from
your tower from Gateway.

I'm guessing though that since it's new that it may have a firewall. If so,
then it's possible that the firewall may be preventing you from uploading.
You should probably get someone you know or the customer support from Dell
to check to see if you have one and help disable it long enough for you to
retry uploading if you do happen to have one.

It sounds like though from your mention of the error Not a Valid RTF File
that the file may be uploading but the Bookshare tools are having problems
processing it. Because John helped you though with Hello Darkness, I doubt
that's the case if he didn't say anything about a bad file, so I'd try the
firewall to see if it's interfering with the upload.

Without more info, I don't know anything else to suggest.

HTH

Gerald

Hi Prat,

Yes, that does help me understand John's job. I wasn't using my head, if I
have one. <grin>

Speaking of John, he suggested that I post a problem I have in uploading
books for admin approval. I have a Dell Notebook and cannot seem to upload
books after validating them. I do the usual, limiting the filename to 8
letters or less, I tried zipping it, I deleted my cookies and did the space
delete trick, and still cannot upload a book which is not large enough to be

a problem.

I recently changed from dial-up on a Gateway Tower to DSL on this laptop.
The error messages I get run from none to things like problem copying the
file, not a valid RTF file, and it just sits on accept until the page
expires. I have tried browsing for the path as well.

I enjoy validating if the book is interesting. Any ideas about why I would
be having problems on this laptop when I had none on the Gateway Tower?

Thanks.

Sue S.

Sue,

I am sure Bookshare has no objection to John approving books if time
permits. John, however, has taken over support duties that take up an
incredible amount of time. In other words, if you recall the duties that
Peter performed when he worked with Bookshare, John is performing similar
duties and has responsibilities that force him to focus on answering user
inquiries in a timely manner. Not only does John focus on answering
technical questions on this list, but he is responsible for answering all
questions that come to him at support@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx With Bookshare's
growing focus on University memberships and student members, I am certain
that John's time is well-spent on areas where he excels a great deal.

I should think Gustavo could let John Glass help approve books since he is
right there in Palo Alto and is the customer support manager.

Wow!! So many new books have been submitted from, I
assume, commercial sources, and you volunteers have
been so busy (I say you, because I'm slower and still
working on one long but fascinating one) that there
are approcxiamtely 275 books waiting for admin
approval. If only someone could help Gustavo with that
project.

And 350 awaiting validation.

And, for those of you who like statistics, 143 on the
rejected list. Some of those look really good; the one
on the top would be good to have for Christmas. Mabe
some of you who like to scan could scan some of the
rejected books. Jake, is there any way to tell when
those books were rejected? If they were rejected some
time ago and haven't been rescanned, then that would
support my argument that having someone like me
validate and fix it, even if it takes a while, would
be better than outright rejection.
