When I did some testing I found I got a little better results using 400 dpi.
It may depend on the scanner.

Ah, it's the same as mine, meaning no disadvantage in scanning with static 
brightness but too slow with grey scale.  It also has a 300 DPI limit, 
which is typically the default for OCR, but people say that some books work 
better at 400 DPI.  If you do get any takers I'd be happy to supply setup 
tips for them.
