I had a Golden-crowned Kinglet in the yard Saturday, only the 2nd I have seen
in 2 plus decades there. As I worked in the flower beds, I thought I would see
just how long a thrasher could sing, he out lasted me, was still at it late
evening. Our large female Cooper's hawk made an appearance also on Saturday.
She came from the neighborhood behind us, and flew straight over the chickens.
When she got over the house she turned sharp left, and another sharp left over
the neighbor's house. With extraordinary speed she dropped low and shot out of
sight behind, and traveling the length of their garage and made the third left
hand turn, heading straight for the chickens. When she made the first turn I
had already started my defense and was moving toward the chickens. When the
hawk made her appearance from behind the garage she was about waist high and
only 10 feet from me. She rolled right showing her under side to me as she
departed whence she came. Thanks to the grackles and Red-winged Blackbirds for
alerting us.
