I have worked with a large city council and with a federal government dept
in Canberra, and both required the insurance.
I don't think they have any choice. Someone in the organisation has made
a policy on the issue 'just in case', and everyone has to enforce that
policy whether they want to or not.

I would be interested to hear the experiences of other federal gov't
contractors.

And if anyone has ever been sued?

You can't do this with government clients. Insurance
is mandatory. ck

My experience proves otherwise. I've worked through my
company on direct contracts for the government-owned
Water Corporation, railways and superannuation board.
I'm currently with a university research group. I've
also worked for multinational defence-based and mining
companies. I've always been able to explain that PE
insurance is not needed, and they've always accepted
that.

As you say, maybe it's a case of being able to educate
the market place. It seems to under control over here
in the west.

Has anyone in our community ever been involved in an
indemnity claim through their writing jobs?

I know there are plenty of incompetent writers out
there, but they generally get their work corrected at
proofing time and get a DCM if they don't buck up
their ideas. They also tend to be the ones who work
for the lower rates with more supervision - and that's
why they get the low pay. Personally, I'd rather pay a
good writer to get it right the first time, but plenty
of employers don't see it that way.
