I agree, in many cases. But there are certifications that offer at least one -- perhaps both -- of these two things: 1. A guarantee of competence, based on adequate testing. 2. Legal protection. Broadly speaking, NAATI accreditation fits into the first, and has some value in the second. A plumber's licence should fit into both. In all cases, of course, there's no testing of ethics, business acumen, or attitudes to customer service.
