Good point Warren about "generation specific" uses. When I was young @
was only used in a type of practical maths, eg. 6 apples @ 50 cents
each - never in English writing.

Bob is also pointing out another issue.
Writing in "International English." WE understand the abbreviations
because we are brought up with them.

That whole abbreviate things and shorten things can be a real worry. It
does seem to be audience (and even generation) specific in some cases.
For instance, when I was younger, @ was a term to abbreviate "around" or
"about"; now look at the usage...
Another instance comes from my first real gig doing stuff for
translation, when the translator said no " n't" shortening, or
abbreviations like "e.g:". It was something I was taught not to do from
the very beginning of my technical writing career. Fortunately I didn't
(thankfully) need to modify or edit my text very much.

Just a thought.
Regards to all.
