My experience has been that FM v 8.0 works better than earlier versions.   As 
is the case with all conversions, though, it helps if you have cleaned styles 
up and eliminated things like style overrides.    And yes, tables still seem to 
be a problem sometimes... but then, such seems to have been the case always in 
format conversions, and particularly if you're going out to Word formats.
Just ran 15 pages of text out to RTF v1.6 via Save As, and it took about 3 secs 
or less.... (no graphics, no tables etc).
It even converted FrameMaker index markers to Word index markers, and took 
(hidden) conditional text with it...
