Well, Armadillo never got beyond the exploratory stage, but it wasn't
a charity either.
More to the point, it's not like rocketry defeated John Carmack, but
rather that he saw a better opportunity elsewhere (virtual reality),
and jumped on it with both hands and feet, dropping rocketry to do so.
As a result, should he ever return to rocketry, he'll have a lot more
money to use. Furthermore, the reputation he had built up contributed
in a major way to the availability of that opportunity to him, and
part of that reputation was from rocketry. There is more than one
sort of capital in the world; returns are not all measured in dollars.
