MSIE offers no support whatsoever for doing gopher URL's. Opera
does not support them directly. As far as I know you cannot ftp
to a gopher site. Gopher and ftp are two entirely different types
of internet protocols. Different RFC's apply to each protocol type.

Browsers that provide direct gopher support are Arachne, Lynx, and
Mozilla Firefox. Both the DOS and the Windows versions of Lynx
will work for doing gopher URL's. There also are some very ancient
versions of Netscape that can do gopher URL's. If you don't want to
use a browser for going to a gopher URL you can use a stand-alone
gopher client. I have a freeware gopher client for Windows available
for download at my gopher site. It works fine, but it is somewhat
difficult to set up and configure. Also available from my gopher
site is the latest and greatest Lynx version for Windows, version
2.8.5, release 1. You can access gopher URL's with Arachne without
even having to install any APM's or plugins and without even having
to mess with your setup and configuration options. The same applies
also to the Lynx DOS and Lynx Windows versions. There also exists
a freeware internet program for DOS named Minuet. Minuet will do
email and it also will do gopher URL's. I used to use Minuet with
my former ISP. Minuet doesn't work very well with my current ISP.

When accessing a gopher site the internet address line starts simply
with "gopher://";. No "http" and no "www". There are lots of gopher
URL's on the internet, but they are not http sites and they are not a
part of the world-wide-web. Gopher holes are cool underground places.
The paranoids who looking for you and who are out to get you are not
smart enough to imagine that they might be able to find you hiding out
in a gopher hole.
