  RAISE THE ROOF

  OCTOBER 18, 2003.

  TIME TO ORGANIZE YOUR TEAMS!

  Call Hugh Sparks at 386-9145

Hands on Housing, in cooperation with the City of Austin Neighborhood Housing
and Community Development Office and other City departments and non-profits,
will be attempting to provide house repair for up to 50 houses on October 18,
2003, in the Govalle/Johnston Terrace neighborhoods.

This event, called "Raise the Roof", will need to recruit up to 750
volunteers from Austin area churches and congregations of faith to do house
painting, minor carpentry repairs, and anything else the teams feel they are
competent to do. There is absolutely no cost to the homeowners for these
services; the volunteers are responsible for providing their own tools and
building materials. Lunch is usually donated by area businesses. To qualify,
clients must live in the city limits of Austin, be the owner/occupier of their
house, and meet Federal guidelines for poverty level income.

There are some programs to help with the costs of building materials for
those teams facing especially costly projects. However, most repairs take no
more than $200-400 per house, and we frequently can get paint donated by the
City of Austin's recycling facility to further reduce the costs.

We would greatly appreciate it if you could make this information available
to the folks where you worship. It's time to begin organizing your teams
because team leaders will need to come by during September to pick the project
of their choice. Together we can truly make a difference for our neighbors in
need.

  Need of the Week

AAIM needs a team of volunteers to recruit congregations that are willing

to provide shelters, meals and volunteers for homeless people on cold winter
nights.

We know if is hard to think about cold weather shelters when it is 100 degrees

outside but these shelters save lives so we must be prepared.
