Christine, good for you girl. I'd have had him for breakfast, dinner and tea with pleasure (smile). We only ever took out cover on our very first Windows desktop many years ago, and got it back because it was part of the deal if you never called out an engineer. We didn't because Ian started to learn how to get inside the guts himself, and then we never looked back. I agree laptops are different in that way in that you can't get to the parts inside easily, and they cost a fortune to replace.

Well done you.

Jackie

Extended warrantee on a desktop is a waste of time if your able to work inside them or know a friend who could whip a drive out and sling a replacement in, but laptops are different, almost impossible to get inside and the parts are outrageously expensive...Accidental insurance on house content will Not Never cover a laptop or mobile and some others, (see my previous post).

When we bought a desktop for our older son from PC world the sales man was almost aggressive when we turned down the warrantee and he wanted to have us sign we had been offered cover but refused it! The computer had already been rung up on the till by then and we were just going to pay! No way were we going to sign that! It was our right to take out cover it wasn't compulsory so when we were threatened "If you don't sign this we can't sell the computer to you" we said "Ok, put it back then" and proceeded to walk out of the shop leaving them with the computer...The chap came after us saying he'd get a way round it, I shook my head and said I didn't want any fuss, to which he replied "No there won't be any, madam".

We bought the computer and of course didn't sign anything but we never got an appology!

I wonder if buying specialist lap-top insurance with acidental dammage works out cheaper then extending warrantees.

Billy

What I would also add to this thread is that most, if not all, manufacturers will offer you extended warranty on your laptop. In fact, my son says that the Sales Advisers at the store where he works depend on it as part of their commission. I didn't take it out because I have accidental damage cover on my home insurance, and I don't think the cover you take out in some shops is all it's cracked up to be.

Where Comet is concerned, I know for a fact that they will come out and set up your PC or laptop for you for an extra payment. My friends did that with their computers recently, and said it was a good service. Again I didn't do it as I had the two Ians to help with registration and getting JFW loaded onto it for me. I think PC World offer something similar for extra dosh.

Again, I'm not advocating Comet over anywhere else. They are probably all much of a muchness. But I like the snippets of info my son tells me about what goes on. I find it interesting.

Good luck.

Christine, I'm sure Jackie will help if she can, but I would suggest trying www.ebuyer.com

Oh please don't take this off group, I'm interested too...But all wide screen laptops have a numerical keypad, I prefere my small laptop though as it takes up less desk/table and its easier to take to college etc. I've bought a laptop kit from Aldi for £13 a while back and in that case there is a key pad, different cables and adaptors, a mouse and a clip on light. Ok I only need the keypad as I'm totally blind, but it was the same price as the ones at PC world but comes in a zipup case and I have the other bits, just incase!

I shall be buying a new laptop this year, so I'm interested in the sound of your new one especially if the sound quality is good? Can you tell us where we can read about it online and find out the cost plus if we can take out an extended guarantee? Many thanks, Christine. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jackie Cairns" <cairnsplace@xxxxxxx>

Hi Billy

I'm currently using an HP Pavilion laptop which we purchased in August 2007. I'm so pleased with it that I'm thinking of changing my old desktop machine for one the same or identical in the not too distant future. To be honest, along with my mobile phone, it was my best purchase last year I like it so much.

The spec of the one I have comprises a 320GB hard drive, 2GB of RAM and runs Windows Vista Home Premium. It supports both HD and Blu-Ray DVD, but I didn't buy it for that reason specifically. It has some crap on it, like most do, but I love its speed and, above all, sound quality. I've got my entire music collection on it and it's brilliant hooked up to my hi-fi.

The beauty of most of the HP laptops is that they have the numeric keypad on them which means you don't need to combine JAWS keystrokes to work with it. Therefore, bear in mind that with a 17 inch screen, it's not the lightest for lugging about, but it isn't an issue for me with my man about (big smile). Also, I think battery life is about two hours, but it isn't an issue for me as such as I don't move it about.

If you want to know more, I can give you further info off list if you prefer.

Good luck.

Jackie

Subject: [access-uk] best Laptop?

hi guys,
I know it is rather difficult to answer this question, as it is a matter of preference, but I am now even more confused on what Laptop to purchase. I have done lots of research on the Internet, and that includes Google, but the only problem there is: Not much Information about visually impaired Laptop users.

I would like to hear from blind Laptop users, and which systems are best for accessibility to visually impaired people.

I have heard about some problems blind users have experienced with ACER Systems.

I'm sure there isn't any particular Laptop that is totally accessible, but I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks in advance,
Billy
