Blindness shouldn't be a consideration as some 20 years or so ago the insurance industry agreed that blindness was considered to be 'normal risk'.
i would think that were it not, then it may contravene the DDA. David----- Original Message ----- From: "Karl Proud" <karl@xxxxxxxxxxx>

Hi,I have added a few specified items to my insurance policy over the last few years so as to cover them out of the house and for accidental damage . Forthe two laptops it has added £100 to my home contents insurance. I have claimed on this policy once as I knocked a cup of Ribena over my laptop which does a great job of screwing it up. No problems claiming and a new laptop was forthcoming. At no point has being blind been an issue and Icarefully checked the policy for barriers to the accidental cover - lets behonest, I have more chance of knocking over a cup than my 8 year old these days. Interestingly, well to me anyway, the new laptop came with a 3 year warranty with on site repairs for which I have now seen two engineers who have replaced my CD Rom drive. All in all, can't complain as yet. I don't believe jewellery, glassesand musical instruments would come under this, also I wonder what the excessto pay would be, as on the stores computer polacy even repairs due to a fault are covered and all without excess. There's so much to consider forthe customer. Hi Christine, This isn't entirely true. We have what is called a rider on our home insurance to cover items above and beyond your regular home items, I.E. expensive paintings, rugs, or jewlery. Your Laptop would certainly be covered if you took out this rider with your insurance company. Accidental damage, including items being dropped and broken are covered withoutquestion. It might be expensive, but oftentimes you really don't have a sayin the matter if you require this type of coverage due to the cost of replacement of disclosed items. Most five year insurances cover accidental, repair or replacement, fully coveredno charge for repairs on parts or labour. My hubby got a new replacement laptop with just 3 months left on the garantee, because it couldn't be repaired, it was really good. If you don't take one out you could almost certainly have to pay out for anew rom drive before two years are out and laptop parts cost a fortune. My laptop had two new cd/dbd/cdrw drive replacements in three years plus a newfan and prosessor. House content insurance wouldn't cover a laptop as its a luxury item which can be taken out of the home, same for things like glasses, jewelery, musical instruments, mobiles and handheld games. House content means justthat, furnature, carpets, appliances and small personal possessions like cdplayer, tv, dvd/video player and a Very small amount of cash is covered. Hope this helps? But we've got accidental damage on our home contents policy. I think you just have to be careful in a shop when they'll promise you the earth to take out extended warranty. I guess what you have to watch with insurance is that if you have an accident, you aren't clobbered with premiums the following year you pay it. Can't you tell I'm not an expert? (smiles). In fact,my son says that the Sales Advisers at the store where he works depend on it as part of their commission. I didn't take it out because I have accidental damage cover on my home insurance, and I don't think the cover you take out in some shops is all it's cracked up to be. Where Comet is concerned, I know for a fact that they will come out and set up your PC or laptop for you for an extra payment. My friends did that with their computers recently, and said it was a good service.Again I didn't do it as I had the two Ians to help with registration andgetting JFW loaded onto it for me. I think PC World offer something similar for extra dosh. Again, I'm not advocating Comet over anywhere else. They are probablyall much of a muchness. But I like the snippets of info my son tells meabout what goes on. I find it interesting. Good luck. Ok I only need the keypad as I'm totally blind, but it was the same price as the ones at PC world but comes in a zipup case and I have the other bits, just incase! I shall be buying a new laptop this year, so I'm interested in the sound of your new one especially if the sound quality is good? Can you tell us where we can read about it online and find out the cost plus if we can take out an extended guarantee? Many thanks, Christine.----- Original Message ----- From: "Jackie Cairns" <cairnsplace@xxxxxxx>To: <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, January 04, 2008 3:33 PM Subject: [access-uk] Re: best Laptop?Hi Billy I'm currently using an HP Pavilion laptop which we purchased in August 2007. I'm so pleased with it that I'm thinking of changing my old desktop machine for one the same or identical in the not too distant future. To be honest, along with my mobile phone, it was my best purchase last year I like it so much. The spec of the one I have comprises a 320GB hard drive, 2GB of RAMand runs Windows Vista Home Premium. It supports both HD and Blu-RayDVD, but I didn't buy it for that reason specifically. It has some crap on it, like most do, but I love its speed and, above all, soundquality. I've got my entire music collection on it and it's brillianthooked up to my hi-fi. The beauty of most of the HP laptops is that they have the numeric keypad on them which means you don't need to combine JAWS keystrokes to work with it. Therefore, bear in mind that with a 17 inch screen,it's not the lightest for lugging about, but it isn't an issue for mewith my man about (big smile). Also, I think battery life is about two hours, but it isn't an issue for me as such as I don't move it about. If you want to know more, I can give you further info off list if youprefer. Good luck. I have done lots of research on the Internet, and that includes Google, but the only problem there is: Not much Information about visually impaired Laptop users. I would like to hear from blind Laptop users, and which systems are best for accessibility to visually impaired people. I have heard about some problems blind users have experienced with ACER Systems. I'm sure there isn't any particular Laptop that is totally accessible, but I'm open to suggestions.
