Hi, what version of JAWS are you using? I know that in JAWS 8, my Windows Live Messenger contacts are automatically announced as soon as they're signed in. Perhaps you told Messenger not to display alerts when contacts sign in? This can be found in Messenger options, under the sounds and alerts category. Hope that helps.

Hi list.I use windows live messenger, but when my contacts come online, I hear an audible alert to say that someone has signed in but I don't know who it is. I would like Jaws, which is the screen reader i use, to anounce the name of contacts who sign in to windows live messenger. Can anyone tell me how to do this using jaws? Thanks. Sue. However, it can be done, but as Steve says, using the software makes it easier. The screen cannot be read, but this is only a very minor aspect. I can't find the URL, but Michael Lang has published a very excellent rough guide on the web. What are the inaccessible bits from a non-visual perspective please? Sorry if this has been covered before. But it's like everything else. When you don't need to know it passes you by!! (smile.) I have had mine for almost three months and wish I had bought inJanuarywhen it was released, and that it was available decades ago!!! Some limitations from a V.I. point of view, but a fantastic piece ofkit.Cheaper from other sources. I bought mine from purely gadgets who are on line. I know that the three devices RNIB advertise onlyappear todiffer in the amount of hours you have for recording and, of course, theprice (smile). But I've heard mention of the Olympus DS50 on thislistquite often, and wonder if it is the same machine. Many thanks everyone.
