I'd buy a video recorder even though they're on the way to being obsolete.
The future is personal video recorders, those hard drive-based systems like
SkyPlus.  You can record on video tapes over and over again, you can play
the tape in pretty much any machine - which you can't do with recordable
DVDs and you get more recording time on a video tape on long play.

PVRs are going to surpass recordable DVDs before there's an accepted
industry standard so you may as well go with a video player as a preferable
stop-gap.
