hi tracey et al, i agree. it's hard enough to get people to alter subject
lines as it is (i'm co-owner/moderator of the blindgamers list and so i know
what i'm talking about!). personally i like george's idea of moderating new
members. i don't know the ins and outs on freelists. but, on the blindgamers
list (which is on yahoogroups) all new members are automatically set on
moderated status until their first few messages have been vetted. they are
then taken off moderated status. and we've not had a single spammer and the
like on the list for months. not, in fact, since this decision was put into
action. if the current moderators feel they don't have time to keep an eye
on such new members, then surely appointing an extra person to do this job
isn't to hard? the blindgamers list has over 220 members and it really
doesn't take up much time to vet the odd message. i doubt there are actually
that many members joining each week! just my thoughts on this.

Hi Steve. Sorry, but I'd have to vote no on this one. For one thing, it
relies on people remembering to do it, and I'd be as bad as the next person
at doing that, particularly as I'm on a whole bunch of lists and would more
than likely forget that I had to include my name in the subject line for
this one. Also, subject lines aren't actually that long, so by the time
you've put your name in there, and then tried to add something concise to
let other list members know what your query relates to, it's likely you're
going to run out of room, or not going to be able to give a good enough idea
of your query to get constructive help from the list. Personally, I'd rather
run the risk of having my e-mail address spammed than have to remember to
put my name in every subject line. Not to mention how complicated it's going
to get if you're replying to someone's message, either having to take their
name out and pput yours in, or ending up leaving out the part of the subject
line that relates to the query. Just my two cents, and obviously I'll go
along with the majority view. Tracey.

keeping it but just add your name in the subject heading?
