John,

In Windows 7 the start menu is searchable. So it?s unlike the XP startmenu.
If you (for example on my machine), did the following

1. Hit Windows Key, to bring up the start menu.

2. Hit r, I?d get ?Adobe reader 9?.

Using your example. To access the run menu you?d,

1. Hit Windows Key to bring up start menu.

2. Type Ru, Run appears.

The way to ensure you open the Run Dialog box which I think you are talking
about is.

1. Press Windows Key, and whilst holding it down hit R.

You, are correct and it?s a handy tip. You can then type Narrator and press
return to launch it.

I was giving Eleanor the keystrokes to start Narrator from the initial setup
screen called the Out Of Box Experience. Which runs on a new machine prior
to the machine having booted for the first time into Windows.

So, Eleanor all this aside. If you are booting into Windows now. Doing the
following will start narrator for you, without any faffing.

1. Wait until the machine gets you into Windows.

2. Press and hold the Windows Key down, and press the letter r.

3. Release both keys.

4. Type narrator and press return.

I?ve just confirmed these steps on two Windows 7 machines and they work
every single time.

UAnother thing is

1. Hit the Windows Key

2. Tyep narrator

3. Press return

Thanks John for the tip! Good old Windows there?s a hundred ways of doing
the same thing.

Cheers,

Barry.

Hi Eleanor, the easiest way to start narrator is from the command line. If
you go to start menu, pressing r will take you to run, then type narrator.
Don't forget it's a double r. I notice you've only put one.

                    John.

Ah yes thanks I know that, it was a matter of me being impatient and wanting
to get the laptop set up immediately. Well I am nearly there and should be
fully there tomorrow. My brother was offering to put on the screen reader
but I stupidly said I was fine and now I will have to ask him to do it as I
just do not appear to be able to start Narator.

Hi,

RNIB have computer volunteers. I'm not sure whether they cover all areas of
the country, however it would be worth asking before forking out £30. I've
used them once or twice (I'm in South-East London) and found them good.

Hope this helps.

before you even got to that stage or if sighted help is not available yes it
would be worth paying the shop to get you up and running best wishes Andrew

Hi

New computer/laptop out of the box!!! Once I turn it on, then anyone able
to tell me the procedure until Windows 7 logo comes up. What will be the
various dialogue boxes and what will I have to be putting in? I could have
paid the shop £30 for the privilege but I am confident you good people with
personal experience will be able to advise me. If people think I should pay
for this privilege then I am open to that advice too.

Many thanks.

Eleanor
